Understanding Triggers in Recovery: A Guide to Managing Emotional Landmines

Updated: Jan 25

A trigger is a stimulus that sets off a craving or emotional response that can lead to relapse. Triggers can be people, places, emotions, or situations that are associated with the individual's addiction.

* Triggers can be overwhelming, but recognizing and understanding them is the first step towards managing them. By identifying one's personal triggers, individuals can develop coping strategies to avoid or manage them.

* Common triggers include specific emotions (e.g., anxiety, boredom), situations (e.g., social gatherings), and people (e.g., friends who use substances).

* To manage triggers, individuals can develop healthy habits such as mindfulness, deep breathing, and journaling. They can also surround themselves with supportive people and engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment.
